Lamplight Lineage, schwarz

Rather than one focal point, the composition works like a salon hang: twenty frames of varied shape and size sit on an informal grid, with the largest pieces, a crested central frame, a tall rabbit oval and a hen in close-up, acting as anchors that steady the eye as it hops from face to face. From across the room it reads as a lively, well-curated gallery wall with a satisfying balance of round, oval and rectangular forms; up close each portrait rewards attention, with soft feathering on the hens' necks, individually painted whiskers and the fine dotted texture of the wall behind. Painted shadows beneath every frame create a convincing trompe-l'oeil depth, so in raking daylight the frames seem to stand proud of the surface, and under evening lamps the polished mouldings appear to catch real highlights. Because the frames spread edge to edge, the mural carries a broad horizontal sweep that widens a narrow room, while its dense, collected feel brings intimacy to a large, echoing one. Ground it with farmhouse materials and pieces with patina: a scrubbed pine table, rush-seated chairs, enamelware, linen tea towels, a painted dresser and a woven wool rug. It works best across one complete wall, above a dresser or breakfast bench, or opposite a child's bed where the faces can be counted, named and chatted about. Each mural is printed to your exact measurements, so the gallery can be positioned to keep favourite portraits clear of corners, sockets and switches.
