The design
Asphodel Salon borrows the formality of a Victorian drawing room and slips something irreverent into every frame. The skulls are drawn with rounded cheeks and heart-shaped nose cavities, closer to folk art than to anatomy, which keeps the mood playful rather than grim. Ornate scrolls curl around each one like wrought-iron gates, punctuated by faceted spikes and trails of tiny dots. The result sits somewhere between a cabinet of curiosities and a hand-blocked heirloom paper. It suits anyone who likes their gothic served with a wink.
Which rooms would this wallpaper complement beautifully?
In a Bathroom, especially a guest powder room, the gothic damask turns a few square metres into a witty surprise behind the basin.
In a Hallway, the stacked frames lead the eye along the corridor and give visitors something to smile at on their way through.
Instead of a single focal point, the composition is an ordered field: medium-sized skulls sit in staggered rows, each cradled by a symmetrical cartouche of scrolls, and alternate rows are inverted so the eye zigzags across the wall rather than settling. Across the room the skulls register as a crisp, almost lace-like lattice; step closer and you notice the dry-brush strokes, the tiny beaded teeth, the faceted crystal points and the slightly uneven edges that betray a human hand. Skulls and scrollwork stand out sharply against the flat ground, so the design keeps its graphic punch in dim evening light, while bright daylight brings the soft brushed texture to the surface. The vertical stacking of the frames lifts the gaze toward the ceiling, and the busy, medium-density layout makes a small room feel deliberately enveloping rather than cramped. Antique brass taps, a carved wooden mirror, apothecary glass, velvet curtains and a clawfoot tub or slim console with candlesticks all lean into its gothic-parlour character. Give it the wall behind a basin or the long side of a corridor, where the detail is enjoyed at close range. Each panel is printed to the exact width and height of your wall, so no skull is sliced awkwardly at a corner or above the skirting.
