Instead of a single focal point, the composition is an ordered field: medium-sized skulls sit in staggered rows, each cradled by a symmetrical cartouche of scrolls, and alternate rows are inverted so the eye zigzags across the wall rather than settling. Across the room the skulls register as a crisp, almost lace-like lattice; step closer and you notice the dry-brush strokes, the tiny beaded teeth, the faceted crystal points and the slightly uneven edges that betray a human hand.
