Rather than a single focal point, the composition is an all-over gathering: larger figures such as the fawn, the foxes and the owls anchor the corners and centre, while smaller birds, mushrooms and sprigs of flowers fill the spaces between, giving the eye a slow, wandering route across the wall. From across the room it reads as a rich, textural woodland scene with real depth from the layered leaves; up close, each animal has its own expression, from the hedgehog hugging a toadstool to a snail perched on a mushroom cap and the fine fur of the squirrels' tails. The contrast between the softly lit animals and the shadowy backdrop gives the piece its glow, with daylight picking out fur, feathers and petals crisply, while evening lamplight lets the background recede so the creatures seem to step forward. Because there is no horizon, the scene wraps a room in a cocooning, den-like feel, making a large space more intimate and a small one feel like a hidden clearing.
