Two layers do the work here: a field of horizontal boards lays down a steady architectural base, and over it the crosses fall in an irregular, confetti-like spread, varied in size and tilt, so the movement comes from the marks while the calm comes from the planks. At a distance the wall reads as a lively, evenly sprinkled texture with faint horizontal banding; step in and the board seams, round knots, brushed-out grain and the dry, tapered ends of each pen stroke come into view. The soft, matt painted finish and crisp contrast of the marks keep it legible in dim corners and fresh in daylight, while raking side light picks out the suggestion of grain so the boards look almost touchable.
