Lacquer Menagerie, blanco

All the action is concentrated in a long, low frieze across the lower half, rising into a jagged procession of balanced towers, from stacked apples and a skewered egg to a skull crowned with a bowler hat, while the upper half is left open like the space above a crowded mantel. From across the room the effect is graphic and airy, a crisp line of curious outlines; up close, the finely etched linework reveals scales on the fish, feathers on a perching parrot, the numerals of an alarm clock and the vertebrae of a coiled snake. That generous open field bounces daylight back into the room and keeps it bright and calm, while evening lamps pick out the dense cross-hatching of the engravings and give the frieze a cabinet-like depth. Because the visual weight sits low, it grounds the room and leads the eye along the length of the wall, and the expanse above makes ceilings feel taller than they are. Pair it with walnut, aged brass, glass cloches, leather-bound books and a velvet wingback chair, or echo the theme with a real shelf of found objects. Choose an uncluttered wall where the lower half stays visible, such as the wall facing a desk or the far side of a dining table, and keep any furniture slim and leggy so the collection is never hidden. Printed to your precise wall measurements, the mural can be scaled so the curiosities line up exactly where you want them.
