Small Hours Wake captures the hush of a night roost, when the scavengers settle in to wait out the dark. A wake, fittingly, is the old name for a gathering of vultures, and here they sit like silent mourners along the boughs. The tree itself is the true architecture of the piece, its colossal, contorted limbs rising almost like a cathedral vault. Behind them the moon shines through a heavy cloud bank, the only soft note in a scene of sharp edges and deep shadow. It is quietly unsettling, richly atmospheric and impossible to walk past without a second look.
